FTP Upload Instructions

This page includes instructions for standard users uploading to their personal web space as well as users who have hosted domains.  There are two sets of directions.

1.  Your first step is to acquire an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program.  FTP clients can be found almost anywhere; however, a notably good client is CuteFTP.  You can download it from http://www.download.com/.   You can find it simply by typing 'cuteftp' into the search box provided on their site.

2.  Here are the pertinent details that need to be filled in when creating a connection in any ftp client.

For Domain Hosted Customers

Hostname They should enter the domain they signed up with here.  For instance 'mydomain.com'
Username This is the username you specified when filling out the new domain form.
Password This is the password your specified when filling out the new domain form.
Host Type Either leave on Automatic, or select Unix.
Remote Host Directory This should be left blank or have a single slash "/"

For Personal Webspace

Hostname ftp.cpunet.net
Username This is the customer's username as specified in your client software.
Password This is the customer's password as specified in your client software
Host Type Either leave on Automatic, or select Unix.
Remote Host Directory WWW/

3.  Once the appropriate settings have been entered into the FTP client program, you can choose to connect.   After connecting you should see a listing of files on your computer, and a listing of files on the server.  Often, unless you have previously uploaded pages, the server will either be blank or include a file called index.html.  Most ftp clients support drag and drop, so to upload files, you now just drag and drop files onto the server side of the listing and they will be uploaded.

4.  Accessing the files.  For domain hosted customers, it is first recommended they replace the default index.html page in their root directory with one of their own as this is the first file loaded when somebody visits their page.  To access a domain hosted website after uploading pages, simply point your browser at http://www.theirdomain.com/.   To access personal webspace, you can point your web browser at http://www.cpunet.net/~username.  Replace 'username' with the username of the customer.

Cpunet Internet Automatic Dial-up Connection Setup Software

The following software pages will allow you to select a local Dial-up number and will configure your computer to use Cpunet internet.   You must have Microsoft Internet Explorer installed as your browser.  This setup software only works with Internet Explorer version 5.0 and up.   You can also choose manually setup your computer to use Cpunet Internet Services with any Internet Browser using the information below and selecting to signup with the Automated Signup Server.  Cpunet Sign-up Server here .   Below there are two setup file areas.  One is for Unlimited Access Time Numbers and the other for our 150 Hour Limited Access Numbers that will only work with our Network 'A' Numbers.
Cpunet's dial-up connection software will only work if you have Internet Explorer installed in your computer as your Internet browser.   You can use this setup to change access numbers or setup a computer that has had a new operation system installed.  Choose the type of account connection either Unlimited or 150 hour limited and select the proper link.  You will be presented with a page to select your State or Canadian Province.  When you select the proper link you will be presented with a page to select your local Number.

IMPORTANT: If you are unsure if the number you choose is a local call, please dial your operator and check to ensure you will not receive any un-expected long distance charges.

When you click on the number, it may ask you to open or save, choose OPEN. This will run the setup file.  Then you will be asked if you wish to modify your internet settings, click OK.

IMPORTANT:   If you are unsure if the number you choose is a local call, please dial your operator and check to ensure you will not receive any un-expected long distance charges.  You can also dial the number and listen if a computer answers.

You can email Cpunet support to check what network you are using or to change to another network such as Network A for the 150 Hour Limited Dial-up Service with the links above.

If you do not know what network your account is on you can Email anytime or call us for help.  There are a few ways you can tell without our help.  If you are an existing Cpunet Customer and are using this software to look for and change to a new local dial-up number when you dial into the Internet you enter a login and password.  If your login ends in ( @cpunet.net ) you are on network 'A'.  If your login ends in ( userservices.net ) chances are that you are on network 'C'.  If your login ends in ( uslogin.net ) you are either on network 'D' or 'F'.  If in doubt, email us for help .

Dial-up Questions:
Dial-up Questions:

Q. I am unable to connect to the Internet. How do I establish a connection?

The following is a checklist you should go through after failing to connect to the Internet.

1. Does a window asking for a username and password pop up more than once? If so, verify your username and password. First, you should check to make sure your CAPS LOCK is not on - this will cause you to type letters in capital, making your password incorrect (your password should be in lowercase). Second, be sure your username is typed in correctly. An incorrect username will result in the same error message. Next, be sure no spaces are in front or behind your username or password. If you are not sure, erase everything in each field and retype both entries.

2. Reboot your machine.

3. Check your Dial-up Network settings. Below you will find how to get to your dialer settings and how they should look.

For Windows 98 (Windows 2000 users will see a similar screen)

1. Double-click "My Computer." (Windows 2000 and Windows ME users will need to go to "Start," then "Settings," and then double-click on "Dial-Up Networking")

2. Double-click "Dial-Up Networking."

3. Right-click on your "My Connection" icon. (Note: you may have named it something else. For example, the name of your Internet Service Provider)

4. Go to "Properties."

5. Your dialer settings should match the figures below.

- Figure 1.0 -

- Figure 1.1 -

    • Make sure the "TCP/IP" box is checked. See Figure 1.0
    • Make sure the "Enable Software Compression" box is checked. See Figure 1.0
    • Make sure the user is set to "Server assigned IP address." See Figure 1.1
    • Make sure the user is set to "Server assigned name server addresses." See Figure 1.1
    • Make sure the "Use default gateway on remote network" box is checked. See Figure 1.1
    • If you are still having trouble connecting, you may want to un-check the "Use IP header compression" box. See Figure 1.1

4. Make sure the Microsoft VPN Adapter is not selected under "Connect using" in the General tab.

5. Windows NT? In the Security Tab in Phonebook, make sure that "accept any authentication including clear text" is checked.

6. Recreate the dialer.

1. Double-click "My Computer." (Windows 2000 and Windows ME users will need to go to "Start," then "Settings," and then double-click on "Dial-Up Networking")

2. Double-click "Dial-up Networking."

3. Double-click "Make New Connection," and follow the instructions.

7. Try disconnecting any phones, caller ID boxes, answering machines, line splitters from line. Plug modem directly into the line. Try using a different phone cord between modem and phone socket. Check for line noise.

8. Reinstall TCP/IP.

9. Reinstall all dial-up components.

10. Modem issue? Update modem drivers, try initials and commas, etc.

11. Try a different modem.

Back to dial-up questions

Q. Sometimes I get disconnected from my Internet service. What could be causing this?

A. Following are some common reasons for losing your connection.

  • Line Noise -- By far the most common cause of being abruptly disconnected from the Internet is line noise or interference. Even if your phone line "sounds OK" when talking over it, your modem is many times more sensitive to line conditions and can be severely affected by poor line conditions. Following are some well known (and very common) things that may cause unwanted line noise inside your home:

    • Damaged or poor internal wiring/bad splices or terminations -- Every place that your line is tapped into in any fashion is a potential problem area. Be sure that all splices are tight and clean. If you are not familiar with splicing wires, have a friend or relative help.
    • Fax machines, answering machines, or other modems on the same line -- Again, a potential weak link because of the junction with the phone line, with the addition of active electronic devices.
    • Wireless transmit / receive devices -- Same as above, however, if you are using a wireless "room extender" to run your computer line though you (as opposed to just having one in some part of the house for another extension) you may not connect very well at all because of the signal conversions that the devices perform. Remove this device and run a hard line to the room.
    • Satellite TV devices (Primestar, DirecTV) -- Again, a potential weak link because of the junction with the phone line, with the addition of active electronic devices. If you think a device that is mentioned above may be causing problems, unplug it from the line (just turning it off probably won't help) and try your Internet connection again to see what affect it has.
  • Call Waiting -- Another major cause of being disconnected is forgetting to disable call waiting before you dial into the Internet. Everyone has heard the familiar "beep" when there is another call waiting - that beep is the equivalent to a heart attack for a modem - it will most likely hang up the connection if that happens. Call waiting can easily be disabled by placing a *70 (70# in some areas - consult your phone book) in front of the number to be dialed (I.E. *70 555-5555). This can be a permanent addition to the dialing process when changed in the "Dial-up Properties" section of your dialer.
  • Picking up another extension -- Be sure that the other members of your household know you're online! If someone picks up the phone to make a call, you may lose your connection.
  • Inactivity timers -- Some ISPs use timed ports that will disconnect a user that has been inactive for 15 minutes. There are also settings in Windows 95/98 & Windows 3.1 that may disconnect you after a period of inactivity.
  • Modem drivers/firmware -- Having the correct and latest modem drivers and firmware is very important with the many changes that have taken place and are taking place in the communications industry. Keep your modem drivers and firmware current.
  • Poor modem quality -- Let's face it, some modems are cheap and just don't work well, and others perform well in certain conditions. Just because you have a modem doesn't mean its the right modem for your situation. A $40 USR Winmodem just doesn't compare to a $300 USR Courier - they are built differently and act differently. If your Internet time is important to you, don't use a cheap modem - get a good modem and save yourself many headaches! Most of the possibilities mentioned above won't matter if you have a poor modem.

Of course, there are several factors that can affect your connection outside your home as well, such as damaged lines, carrier devices, and even weather conditions. To determine if there are any outside factors at work, you will need to contact your phone provider. When calling to have your line checked, rather than telling them it is computer related, tell them that you are having problems being heard by and hearing the other party (the second you mention computers or Internet they will pass your problem off on us, as they are obligated only to provide voice grade service to customers - voice grade is all a modem needs to function though, so your end result is having them service the line to improve the quality to voice grade). Also, your phone provider may not catch the problem the first time through - don't be afraid to ask them to check it again if the problem persists, but be absolutely sure that you have explored the other reasons listed below - they can't fix it if it's not broken.

Q. Why do I only connect at 21600 or 24000 when I have a 28800 or 33600 modem?

A. Many factors affect how "fast" your modem connects:

  • Your phone line conditions and distance from your phone company.
  • Your modem make & configuration.
  • Your PC's software configuration.
  • Compatibility between your modem and ours.

Your modem may connect at a variety of different speeds depending on these factors. Many of our users are located in rural areas - expect mid to lower 20s from your 28.8 or 33.6 modem - modems in these types of areas just can't connect as fast because of the miles of telephone lines that they must "talk" over.

Back to dial-up questions

Q. Why don't I connect any faster than 33.6 when I have a 56K modem?

A. More than likely you are experiencing one of the following:

  • You live too far away from your phone company's central office.
  • You have too much line noise or interference.
  • You have more than one analog to digital conversion in your phone line.
  • Do you have a V.90 or K56Flex modem? If not you will not connect above 33.6.

Q. How can I improve my connect speed?

A. If your connection is excessively slow or frequently dropped, you may have some line noise problems. See the section above pertaining to line noise. You should always have the latest firmware for you modem - especially if you have a 56K modem. Firmware updates are done to fix common problems with modem connections. Failing to keep your firmware current is a major cause of "it used to work and now it doesn't" problems. ISPs upgrade their firmware on their communications servers very regularly to keep up with newer model modems - be sure your modem keeps up too. Contact your modem's manufacturer for more information. Or, you may simply need to configure your modem differently by using a modem initialization string, which is an easy thing to try! If you don't know anything about initialization strings, you can contact your modem's manufacturer for more information.

Back to dial-up questions

Q. If I have unlimited access, then why do I get kicked off if I have a connection that has been idle for 15 minutes?

A. It is considered abuse of service to remain connected and inactive for extended periods of time. Unlimited means use it when you need to - if that means 5 minutes per day or 5 hours per day - but does not mean you have a dedicated connection to the Internet to leave connected 24/7 whether you are using it or not. It is not fair to your ISP or your neighbors who want to use the Internet as well.

Q. What is the definition of Unlimited Access?

A. We define Unlimited Access as accessing our services on an "as needed" basis when the user is actively participating in the session and sitting at the computer. When a user steps away from the computer for more than a few minutes, he or she should disconnect and reconnect later when necessary. We see it the same as making a phone call - when you are done talking to the other party, you hang up the phone and call back later when you want to talk again.

Back to dial-up questions

Q. How do I set up my e-mail account?

A. These instructions are intended to help customers configure Microsoft Outlook Express.

1. Open Microsoft Outlook Express.

2. Go to "Tools" on the menu bar, and then select "Accounts." You should see a window like the one below.

3. Make sure the "Mail " tab is selected. Go to the "Add" button , and then select "Mail."

4. In the Display name field, type in the name you would like to appear in your e-mail. Click Next.

5. Enter your e-mail address in the field provided. Click Next.

6. Make sure your incoming mail server is selected as a "POP3" mail server. In the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) and in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server fields, type in, as an example, mail.yourdomain.com. Your domain name proceeds the @ symbol in your e-mail address. For example, if your e-mail address is username@smartwire.net, your Incoming and Outgoing mail would be mail.smartwire.net. Click Next.

7. Type your username in the "Account name" field, and your password in the "Password" field. Use the same username and password you used to sign-up, or use the most current username and password your Internet Service Provider has given you. Click Next.

8. Click Finish to save your settings.

Back to dial-up questions

Q. How do I set up an additional e-mail?

A. Additional emails are setup the same way as default e-mail addresses (see above), except you would enter a different e-mail address (Step 5 above), and a different account name and password (Step 7). You may also choose to use a different display name (Step 4).

Q. I can't send or receive e-mail. How do I get it to work?

A. There may be an error in your Outlook Express e-mail settings. Let's check, shall we?

1. Open Microsoft Outlook Express.

2. Go to "Tools" on the menu bar, and then select "Accounts."

3. In the Mail tab, go the e-mail account you are having trouble with and click on the "Properties" button.

4. Click on the General tab. You should see a screen similar to the one below. Make sure the "Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing" box is checked. Also, make sure your correct e-mail address is typed in the E-mail address field. Click Apply.

5. Click on the Servers tab. Make sure your Incoming mail (POP3) and Outgoing mail (SMPT) server names are correct. For example, if your e-mail address is username@smartwire.net, then your Incoming and Outgoing mail server names would both be mail.smartwire.net. Also, make sure you have entered your correct username and password. You may want to reenter them just in case. Both the "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" and "My server requires authentication" boxes should be unchecked. Click Apply.

6. Click on the Connections tab. Make sure the "Always connect to this account using" box is unchecked.

7. Click on the Security tab. Your screen should look like the one below. Click Apply.

8. Click on the Advanced tab. Make sure both "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" boxes are unchecked. Click Apply.

9. Click OK to save your settings.

What is a domain name?      [TOP]
A domain name is something that is used to identify a piece of web space that houses a web site. In reality that web space is identified by a set of numbers like
209.197.252.5 (an IP Address) - but as humans are less likely to forget words a name is "attached" to those numbers and is unique to that web space.

Do I have to have a business to get one?      [TOP]
No. Anyone anywhere can purchase a domain name and pretty much use it for whatever they like providing they are not infringing someone else's copyright or trademark.

Do I need one?      [TOP]
This depends on what you are wanting to do. If you are a company then a proper stand alone domain name is much more professional looking than using free web space provided by someone like Freeserve or Virgin - www.yourcompany.com is more likely to create the right image than your.company.Freeserve.co.uk. Also, a secondary domain does not stand much of a chance on the search engines as a lot of engines refuse to list non stand alone domains at all.
And domains are so inexpensive now there's no real reason not to buy one!
On the other hand if you are just running a personal site for friends and family then a proper domain name is not so important but again, at the price they cost why not?!

What domains do you sell?       [TOP]
We deal with the main domains - .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .ca

What is the best domain name for me?      [TOP]
Most people prefer either a .com or a .net. A .ca identifies you as a Canadian business. A .com was originally a USA domain name meaning a commercial site but nowadays it has become an international domain.  .org  is essentially for organizations and .net was initially for ISP's and network organizers but again has become more widely used.
So, really, the domains have for the most part long lost their intentional purposes and anyone can buy them, but most people usually go for the .com versions simply because these are the most widely used and if someone knows your name but can't remember the extension, they will generally try a .com first.
In an ideal world you would choose a name available in .com and perhaps .net and cover all the bases - but to do that depends on your name being available.
If you already have a domain name and just require the web space fill out the form after visiting our hosting page.

Can I buy domains of just two letters?      [TOP]
No all the .com's are gone!

What about dashes?      [TOP]
There are mixed views about putting dashes in a domain name (by dashes we mean the - sign) Generally there is no harm apart from a number of dashes in a name can make it a bit of a mouthful to tell people. However, it may be the way to get the name you need and include words that will help with search engine rankings.
Dashes can go-in-between-words but NOT at the beginning or end ; www.-domains-.com

What if I can't get the domain I want?      [TOP]
Good domain names are rare so you might have to add dashes in between words or add a call to action at the beginning of the name: www.domainames.com is gone so try www.fastdomain names.com or www.fast-domain-names.com or www.quick-domain-names.co.uk and so on. Eventually you should find a combination that works.

How much are they and are there any hidden fees?      [TOP]
..com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .ca cost $13.95 for a one year registration. Once you have made that payment the domain is yours and there are no other costs involved at all.

How will I know when the registration is due for renewal?      [TOP]
If you want to renew the registration simply pay the fee again or let it expire if you no longer want the domain. Letting a domain expire is not like ignoring a bill and doesn't prevent you from registering other domains at a later time - there is of course the possibility that should you want to register a name that you previously owned but let expire then somebody else may have bought that name and there isn't anything you can do about it.

What do I get for my money?      [TOP]
You get registration for however many years you specified - - . The domain can be parked - just purchased but with no function, waiting whilst you decide what you want to do with it.

How do I pay for the name?      [TOP]
You can either search for an available domain and purchase through the online form at the end using your credit card.

Can I cancel a Domain Purchase?     [TOP]
Once a Domain has been registered it cannot be canceled. After the initial registration period has expired it can then be allowed to relapse.  THERE ARE NO REFUNDS FOR DOMAIN NAME PURCHASES

How long does it take for the domain to work?      [TOP]
24 hours after a domain has been registered it should be showing as belonging to you. The best way to check this is to search for it as if you were wanting to buy it and then click on current owner information - this should show your details. If it doesn't allow another 12 hours and if you still see the name as available let us know immediately.

Once I buy the domain is it always mine?      [TOP]
The domain is yours for as long as you registered it. Providing you renew the name there is no reason why you shouldn't own it for as long as you wish.

What is the point in just having a domain but no web site?      [TOP]
You may want to make sure nobody else gets it! You may own a .com but want the .net to avoid visitor confusion. You may just not have finished designing your site and want to wait before getting hosting..

What if I want the site hosted later?      [TOP]
No problem, just let us know when you are ready and we can set it up immediately, or click here.

What if I want the site hosted now?      [TOP]
If you need a domain name and hosting, then first purchase your domain name, then purchase one of our hosting plans.

What if I want the site hosted by someone else?      [TOP]
Just let us know the host's details and we will do this within 24 hours free of charge.  However we must have the username and password that was emailed to you after you purchased your domain to edit your DNS. We will need the other hosting company's DSN information to point your domain to their servers.

How can I contact you?      [TOP]
You may contact us either by the live support buttons on each page, or through email

Hosting
What is web hosting and why do I need it?       [TOP]
When you type in a domain name you generally then see a set of pages making up a web site. Originally these pages would have been constructed on a computers' hard drive. Once their creator is happy with the site he then needs a computer that is continually connected to the Internet so that anyone from anywhere can see the site at any time. This is the web space and the site is hosted on that computer. We provide that web space so you can "publish" your web site for all the world to see!

How do I get hosting?       [TOP]
If you already have a domain name and just require the web space fill out the signup form after visiting our hosting page. If you need a domain name as well search for that domain  Domain Name Registration Page.

How much does it cost and are there any hidden fees?       [TOP]
Hosting costs are as low as $5.00 per month - that includes the transfer of the domain you have already. If you need just email hosting (user@yourdomain.com) you may select this package as well. You can add more features to your web space and the costs for these are listed on the hosting page.

What does the package consist of?     [TOP]
The package consists of the features listed on the hosting page. As well as the "hardware" you also get an assurance that we will help with any specific web related problem you may have provided it is within our knowledge!

How do I pay?       [TOP]
You can either search for an available domain and purchase it along with hosting through the online form at the end using your credit card - this is completely secure and handled by AuthorizeNet, a reputable merchant service- or you can order by phone, again with your credit card. If you just require hosting then an order form can be accessed via the hosting page.

Does your hosting carry your banners or adverts on my web pages?       [TOP]
No, none whatsoever - when you buy hosting that web space will only show whatever you put there.

What if I have a domain name I bought elsewhere and want hosting from Cpunet?  [TOP]
No problem, place your order and we will contact you right away with instructions on how to move the domain from your current host or domain holder.

What if I bought a domain name from Voodoo Creations some time ago and now want it hosting?
Simply go to our hosting page, select a plan suitable, and enter your domain name..  [TOP]

How much web space do I get and what is a MB?      [TOP]
A MB is a megabyte which is a measure of computer space. You can purchase up to 650 megs of web space.

How long before my web space is active?     [TOP]
The FTP details will be with you within a couple of hours normally. Usually it can take a day or two for the domain name to associate with the web space and then you are up and running!!

Can I cancel Hosting?     [TOP]
If you wish to cancel hosting this can be done if you contact our office at 1-
862-8628  We will return your call.

What is FTP?      [TOP]
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is something novice webmasters sometimes struggle with in the beginning. FTP allows the transfer of your web pages and images from your computer to your web space. We do not mind at all talking you through this over the phone.

What is CGI?      [TOP]
CGI stands for Common Gateway Interface. When you fill out a form on a web site and get a "thanks, we'll be in touch" page afterwards, this has been due to a cgi script. CGI scripts also run counters (devices for measuring the amount of visitors you get to a site), guestbooks, domain name searches! and a huge number of other features you see on the web. There are a number of CGI scripts you can download from the members area and we are also happy to help with your CGI problems if we can.

Do I get any CGI scripts with my web space?      [TOP]
Yes - preinstalled are a counter script -
Contact Manager - and a redirect script.

What is email forwarding?      [TOP]
If you buy www.yourdomain.com email forwarding allows you to have as many email addresses as you wish for that domain. So that means you can have steve@yourdomain.com, fred@yourdomain.com, sales@yourdomain.com, enquiries@yourdomain.com, in fact, as many of those addresses as you wish. And they can all be forwarded to an email accent of your choice. So if your email address is bob@Freeserve.co.uk or bob@hotmail.com any email to those addresses above will land in your Freeserve or hotmail email account.

What is a POP box?      [TOP]
This allows you greater control over email - for instance if you wanted any mail to bob@yourdomain.com to only go to bob@freeserve.com then a POP box allows this to be set up - you can have unlimited such POP boxes.

What is an Autoresponder?      [TOP]
An auto responder automatically sends a message back to the sender of the incoming message to your POP box - say for example you were on holiday, the autoresponder could be set to send the message - "thanks very much for your enquiry - i am away from the office at present but will deal with your enquiry on my return" - back to the sender of each message it receives.

What are PHP and Perl       [TOP]
These are all various forms of web page authoring or ways to get things to happen on your site. They are more advanced than basic web page writing but if you are going to learn any of them or have your site designed by an agency they are important to have as available.

What is a subdomain?      [TOP]
Sometimes you will have seen a domain name like http://www.cpunet.
net/host/ -- this is a web site within a web site. You simply add a word or words before the main domain name, put a dot and you have another website complete with its own features, email and more. This is handy if you intend to have members areas or various departments to your site. Sub domains are free but we do have to set them up so you have to let us know what you want.

What is DNS?      [TOP]
DNS are what a web domain name attaches to and shows the web site within that web space. A domain name requires these to function. If you were to move a web site from one host to another then you need to tell the old host the new DNS - they then attach the new DNS to the domain name and a short time later the web site will show at its new web space.  Our DNS
will be provided when web hosting is setup. .

What is an IPS Tag?      [TOP]
An IPS tag identifies who has control of the domain, if you want your new host to be able to modify the details of the domain - contact and technical contacts etc., then the control of the domain must be changed along with the DNS.

Do you supply Win2000/NT hosting?      [TOP]
We do and at very similar prices - please contact us for details.

If I get stuck will you help?      [TOP]
No problem, the only time we won't help is if we can't! There is also a great deal of help accessible from the control panel.

Can I add further features to the space and at what cost?      [TOP]
Our package consists of just about everything you will ever need for your web site - there are no extras, no hidden costs.

If I get lots of visitors will I have to pay more?      [TOP]
Bandwidth is the amount of accrued data transferred between your web site and the sites visitors - 2GB is more than ample for just about every web site - should you exceed this limit by a small amount every so often you will not incur any penalties. Should your site become a large drain on our resources we do reserve the right to suspend your account until a suitable solution is reached.

Can you help if my site is a success and I need advice?      [TOP]

  4. How do I set up my personal web site space?
You need to be a customer already, go to the members area or  clicking here:

Your personal web site location is: http://www.cpunet.net/host/username

    Back to the questions

  5. Why am I having trouble logging in?
There are several possible reasons you may not be able to successfully log in to our system:

    1) If your system has not been rebooted your computer for a while you may be prevented from logging on. This occurs because your system’s resources have been depleted from opening and closing programs. Simply shut down your system and turn your computer off and back on.

    2) Sometimes, people mistakenly type their username or password incorrectly. cpunet standard requires passwords be lowercase. Make sure you don't have your Caps Lock key depressed.  We require all usernames to have the suffix "vod" in front of every username.  Make sure your username is correct and includes the correct prefix "@networkname.net" at the end.

    example: vodjohn@usbcom.isp

    3) Your connection may be affected if your hard drive is full. Check your available space. If you are running low on space (as a general rule, you should have about 30% of your hard drive space free), you can either delete unnecessary files or install a bigger or additional hard drive.

    4) Dialup accounts are limited to one session at a time. Someone may already be connected with the dial up account you are trying to use. Call customer service to purchase multiple dial up accounts if you need to have more than one simultaneous connection.

    5) Make sure your account is not past due; although we attempt to contact overdue accounts before disabling your username, we sometimes are unable to provide this courtesy.

We do perform periodic maintenance and upgrades to our system which can cause services to be temporarily unavailable to you. Normally, we will contact you via email at least 24 hours before a scheduled maintenance or upgrade (we do use your vcmails email account, so please check this daily to ensure you do not miss our notices).

On rare occasions, we may be having problems with our equipment. We do monitor our system and will address any unscheduled system outages as quickly as possible.

  6. Why is it taking Cpunet so long to authenticate my username or password?
Cpunet has some of the fastest Radius Servers ( the servers that log you into the Internet).
The most common reason for a delay in authentication is an incorrect setting in your dial-up properties. Go to My Computer, then choose Dial-Up Networking. Right-click on the 'cpunet' icon and choose Properties from the menu. Select the Server Types tab and make sure that the Log on to network checkbox is not selected. If it is selected, de-select it, save your changes, and this should solve the delay.

    Back to the questions

  7. What is causing my computer to disconnect from the Internet?
If you experience constant/continual disconnects, the following could be the cause/solution:

    1) Your browser may need updated or reloaded.

    2) Disconnects can be a sign of ‘noise’ on your telephone line. If you ‘hear’ static on your phone lines, contact your local telephone company.

    3) Your modem or modem drivers may be faulty. Updating your modem driver may help. Other times, you will need to upgrade/replace your modem.

    4) You might need to reload your operating system (Windows 95/98/ME, etc). Sometimes certain files can become corrupted if your computer has locked up or been shutdown improperly.

    5) If you are ‘knocked off’ a particular web site, yet remain connected to the internet, there may be a problem with the site you are visiting. Try accessing this site later, or email the webmaster of the site for further information.

    6) cpunet does end connections after 6 hours if you have not had any activity on your computer. This allows us to make sure our customers do not experience busy signals due to other customers forgetting to disconnect their computer when they have completed their session.  (Downloading files is not considered 'activity';  there must be mouse or keyboard movement).

    Back to the questions

  8. How can I improve my computer's Internet connection speed?
If you are a new user, you need to address four things to ensure your computer is ready to connect at the best possible speed:

    1) Your computer’s processing speed. Although you don’t need the latest, fastest computer to connect, a fast computer will perform better than a slow computer.

    2) The amount of RAM you have in your computer. Increase your ram to at least 64 or 128K for improved performance. (More RAM = Better Performance).

    3) The speed and type of modem you are using. A 56K v.90 modem is the fastest speed for dialup connection with cpunet; different brands of modems get different performance (we recommend U.S. Robotics / 3Com for consistently good performance).

    4) The quality of the telephone line service you have at your location. If you have poor voice phone service or wiring in your home, your internet performance will be affected.

    Back to the questions

  9. Why is my connection slower at some times and faster at others?
If your internet performance has recently slowed down, or your speed/performance varies from time to time, you should consider:

    1) The time of day you are connected–the more people using the internet, the slower your speed will be.

    2) Your hard disk is full or needs defragmented.

    3) You loaded/downloaded a program which may be conflicting with your internet connection. Remove suspected program or contact the provider for further instructions.

If your internet demands have outgrown your internet connection speed, you can upgrade to ISDN which delivers reliable, high-speed internet access. cpunet provides ISDN services in selected areas. Call us to find out if ISDN is available in your area.
